| Question | MP | ADUN |
|---|---|---|
| Legislature | Federal Dewan Rakyat | State Legislative Assembly |
| Constituency | Parliamentary seat | State seat |
| Main law-making level | Federal | State |
| Election cycle | Parliament | That state assembly |
| Common title | Member of Parliament | Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri |
Overlapping geography does not mean identical responsibility
One parliamentary seat usually contains several state seats, but electoral boundaries can change and should be matched spatially rather than inferred from names. A resident can therefore have both an MP and an ADUN serving different legislative levels.
A useful first question
Ask whether the issue concerns federal law or administration, state law or administration, or a municipal service. The answer identifies the institution before it identifies the person to contact.
Common questions
Do I vote for both an MP and an ADUN?
Eligible voters in a state normally vote in both parliamentary and state elections, although those elections may occur on different dates.
Can one MP seat contain several DUN seats?
Yes. The boundaries overlap, but the relationship is not always a simple or permanent one-to-many mapping.
Who handles a local council complaint?
The relevant PBT is usually the operational starting point. An ADUN or MP may assist, but that does not transfer the service responsibility to their legislature.
